The Eilat International Jazz Festival was the "pioneer" of the many festivals now held in the city. This Year's Festival, at the end of August, will be the 13th consecutive one to be held in Eilat.
The festival, which has acquired a reputation all over the world, attracts thousands of visitors every year, mainly thanks to the renowned performers who take part in it.
The musicians invited to participate in the Jazz Festival represent a wide range of Musical styles: be-pop, fusion, jazz-rock, rhythm and blues, etc...
Some of the musical ensembles which have taken part to date have been unique, new groups formed especially to perform in the festival; naturally, these have been unparalleled attractions.
The main Festival events are held outdoors, in the Port of Eilat, near the boat anchorage.
The Festival "halls" are defined by cargo containers, which are usually used to transport goods. Between the halls, in the centeral courtyard, there are stalls selling food, drinks and souvenirs.
During the festival, street performers can be found in the central locations throughout the city. Their performances, called "Jazz Outside", take place on beaches and in shopping centres, and welcome young artists at the beginning of their career, for whom this may well be the first opportunity to enjoy an audience.
The "Jazz outside" shows are held throughout the day, and are open to the public free of charge. In addition to the performances held in the port of Eilat, the best Jazz artists who perform in the Festival hold master classes. These are intended mainly for musicians, but are also attended by Jazz-lovers interested in in-depth study of the foundations and the creative process of jazz.
The master classes are held in the Meyerhoff Arts center, located directly across from the port.
For years the artists of the Jazz festival have been holding jam sessions around the pool of the Riviera hotel and with each successive year, the jam session becomes more and more of an inseperable part of the festival itself.
It's meeting of all the "night owls" and jazz aficionados which continues until the sun comes up.
